Best 4K Gaming TVs – with features you need

Best 4k gaming TVs

Before I can tell you the Best 4k gaming TVs, I must first explain why 4k TVs are actually worth buying right now.  A year ago if someone asked me if they should have a 4k TV for console gaming, I would have said without hesitation, don’t waste your money.  At the time it wasn’t even really worth it to buy a 4k TV let alone for console gaming.  Three things happened over the the last year that made me change my answer.

  1. The PS4 Pro & Xbox One S came out.  Both consoles support 4k & HDR gaming.
  2. The Xbox One X will be coming out in November of 2017.  It will take 4k HDR console gaming to a whole new level with Native 4k resolution.
  3. 4k TV prices came down Dramatically
  4. HDR is now available on more 4k TV’s.

For more on the consoles specifically please see my post on the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S.  If you’d like an in depth guide to see which console is right for you please see me Best Gaming Consoles post.

With these new consoles arriving, 4k TVs becoming much more affordable & HDR tech added to most 4K TVs  it is a very good time to buy a 4k TV for gaming.  The current state of HDR tech is what really made purchasing a 4K TV a consideration to me.   It really made me take another look at 4K TVs. The difference in 4k resolution vs 1080p HD resolution was noticeable however adding HDR in the mix put the difference on a whole new level.  The added range from light to dark made 4k really shine.  In turn, HDR added to the value of 4k gaming since high contrast from light to dark is so important in gaming.  Then you throw in the fact that you can now get a great 4k TV for gaming for under $650 & I’m sold.

When looking for a 4k TV you intend to use for console gaming one thing to keep in mind is the Best 4k TV out right now may not be the best 4k TV for gaming.  You want to be able to get the best game play experience.  4k & HDR are great but they can have an enormous effect on both input lag & refresh rate.  That being said I’m going to go over some of the key features needed to game in 4k & give my recommendations for the best 4k gaming TVs.

Best 4k Gaming TVs

Important features for a 4k gaming TV

There are many features to consider when purchasing a 4k TV for gaming.  It’s not wise to just buy the lowest priced 4K TV you can find or even the best one you can find.  You not only want a great 4k TV but you need it to have a good input lag response time, good refresh rate & HDR capabilities.  While 4k TV prices have come down considerably, you want to be able to enjoy it for many years to come.  After all what’s the point in purchasing a “future proof TV” if it doesn’t last or have the features needed for a a great gaming experience.  I’m going to go through some of the important things to look for to get the most out of your 4k gaming TV & list the best options to suite your preferences & budget.

If you’d like a  better explanation of 4k HDR gaming please watch the video below: Just an FYI it was created before most 4k HDR titles were released, so there is a ton of 4K HDR content out there for console.  The reason I attached this video is because it explains in great detail what 4k HDR gaming really is.

  • Input Lag – If you intend on playing online this may be the most important thing you look for. There’s no point in having a great picture quality if you experience lag while playing.  Look for the lowest possible input time for your budget. Any input time much over 30 ms just isn’t going to cut it for competitive online multi-player.

  • Frame Rate – You need to find a TV that has a good frame rate in 4k resolution.  Higher frame rates allow for a smoother game play experience.  Low frame rates can create a choppy effect & allow motion blur to occur.  Motion blur or choppy motion is very bad in general but especially for gaming.  Some 4k TVs offer some kind of technology to limit motion blur.  Some of these sets actually do a pretty decent job at it.  Be sure to check the specific frame rate of 4k resolution.

  • HDR – High Dynamic Range is a technology that increases the range of light & dark allowing the TV to show darker dark’s & lighter lights.  This higher range of colors allow for higher contrast.  It can also greatly effect color accuracy.  In my opinion HDR is what makes gaming in 4k worth the extra cost.  HDR really makes your games pop on screen & is a must have for console gaming on a 4k TV.

  • Screen Size – Some people prefer gaming on smaller screens while some people prefer larger screens. A larger screen can really help to immerse yourself in the game. Although if it’s too large you may find that in games like FPS you can’t see the entire screen without moving your head. This will increase your reaction time causing you to not be as competitive in online multi-player.  I prefer somewhere between a 45 & 55 inch screen but I like to sit fairly close to the screen.  The further away you are the larger the screen you can get without it effecting your game play experience. This will depend on personal presence.

Best 4k gaming TV Overall

Samsung Electronics UN55MU9000 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2017 Model)

This TV has it all.  It’s as if Samsung built this TV specifically for console gaming.  It has a fast refresh rate & the picture on this set is about as good as you can get without going for a more expensive 4k OLED Display.  It’s also worth mentioning that 4k OLED Displays also tend to have a much slower input lag response time.  That being said the picture quality on this set is almost as good as a 4k OLED set but with an input lag response time of just over 20 ms.

Considering I’m a FPS gamer, the super fast input lag response time & the expense of a 4k OLED  TV  is what gives this TV a slight edge over any 4k OLED set.  If your going to be gaming online at all & want amazing picture quality, this is the set I recommend for you.  You will not find another set with such a great picture, input Lag time & refresh rate.

If you want to save a few hundred $’s, there is always the MU8000.  This set is very similar to the MU9000.  The only real difference is the HDR effects aren’t quite as bright & the dark’s aren’t quite as dark but for a few hundred $’s less this may be the best option for you.

Best 4k gaming TV Display

LG OLED55B6P Smart 4K Ultra HD TV:

This TV is a great set for gaming.  I would say it’s the best OLED 4k HDR set for gaming.  It has one of the best pictures on any set available today.  There’s no doubt the picture quality is better than the Samsung KS9000 & it’s HDR effect is much more noticeable as well.  The only thing keeping this for best overall is its much higher price & it’s higher input Lag time.  It’s somewhere around 34 ms in game mode with 4k HDR mode.  This is still a decent input lag response time but for players who spend most of their time online playing FPS it is a bit too high compared to the Samsung KS9000.  If your a gamer with a higher budget looking for the most beautiful picture quality who doesn’t care as much about competitive online play, then this is the set for you.

Best budget 4k gaming TV

Samsung UN43KU7500 Curved 43-Inch: (you can select different screen sizes to suite your preference & or budget when you get to amazon via the link)

This TV is a a great value for gamers.  It has a good picture, great input Lag time & a solid Frame rate.  It offers HDR Technology as well, however don’t expect the picture to match up against the other 2 picks but for under $650 for a 43 inch screen it’s an amazing Buy.  If you’re looking for a good 4k TV for gaming with a low budget this is my recommendation.  Or if your looking to get the biggest screen possible with all the features need for gaming, you can get the 65 inch version of this TV for under $1,200.  Just select the 65 inch screen size under the TV name when you get to the linked page.

    • It depends on the set. Most sets will only display 4k content at around 30 frames per second. Some sets have a game mode which can help a lot with the refresh rate & input lag. All the sets I recomended have this feature. So if you are around 30 frames per second for 4k content you should be good in game mode.

  • Hey Bill, you have a great article here. I was hoping that the prices for a 4k tv had come down a bit more than they are. Though the best budget TV you have here looks great for the price.
I was wondering what you think about how the prices will be in a year from now. Do you think it would be best to wait a while for them to drop. The seventeen and nineteen hundred dollars ones are just a little out of my budget for now but I do like the features of them. So do you think in a years time they might be a little less expensive?
But then again I don’t know if I want to wait that long, decision, decisions, what’s a person to do, LOL
Thanks for the article, it has given me something to think about.
    Kim

    • That’s a great question. The answer is a bit tricky though. As you know Technology is constantly being updating quickly. When it comes to a TV, Computer or really any piece of electronics this rapid growth leads to them quickly becoming outdated. This generally leads to price drops for that Tech. 4k is still realitivly new & HDR capable TV’s have become the norm on 4k TV’s even more recently. Sometimes there is a sweet spot for Tech. That time where the tech has been around for a while & they have made improvements upon it to make it even better (HDR in this case) but the price has still become more affordable due to more companies featuring that tech. I believe this is that sweet spot for 4k TV’S. This is just my opinion & we will have to wait & see. A year from now you will almost certainly be able to find a “cheaper” 4k TV but there will probably be more features or some other kind of technology added to 4k that makes the premium models more expensive. So right now may be the time to buy, because you can get most of the current features & Tech on a great 4k TV for a good price. The budget model I recomended is still a great set even now. You could always start with that model for now & use it as a second set a year or 2 from now when you have the extra cash to spend on a more updated model. Ultimately it is your decision. I hope I helped you make an informed decision.

  • You are very Welcome. I know it’s not always easy to make these kind of decisions. My goal here is to help you make the decision that’s right for you. Let me know if you need anything else.

  • Hello Bill.
You have a great site here.
I haven’t played console games for a long time, as I used to own most of the consoles that were released years back.

I’m getting back to gaming now so I got a couple of questions here for you, and this first one may be a bit tricky for you.
I’m thinking of getting the Nintendo switch, and one of the either the xbox scorpio, or ps4 pro.

Can the Nintendo switch play 4k games? Is the machine optimised for that?
Also, my budget is around $500 for a 4k tv. Are they available or are they not that cheap yet?

    Cheers, from Amar!

    • Amar-V,

Nintendo switch is not capable of playing games in 4k. It has a maximum resolution of 1080p. It is still a solid choice. It’s meant for more fun gaming rather than realistic. It also has the advantage of being a rather family friendly console & it is also a hand held device. You can read my post on the Nintendo switch if you want more info on it. I also have some great info on the Scorpio & PS4 Pro. The PS4 Pro is a great console with the Switch & the Scorpio looking to be great when they come out as well. They just all have different things to offer, so it’s up to you what’s important to you. I recommend you check out those posts before you decide to buy. As for a 4k TV for $500 there are plenty of 4k TV’s in that price range. Just none that I would recommend gaming on. If your not going to be gaming online or don’t mind turning your settings down a bit for certain games than it doesn’t matter as much. The least expensive one that I would feel comfortable recommending for the best 4k gaming experience is the Best Budget 4k TV from my post the Samsung UN43KU7000. If you click on the link to amazon this model is also offered in a 40 inch model for just under $600. I hope I helped answer your questions. Thanks for reading & for the comment. Have a great day.

  • I noticed that you only recommend to by 4k TV’s that are on Amazon, what is your reason for this? I have a few concerns on how they would transport and if insurance is included in the price. On another note can any of these 4k gaming TV’s connect to a computer and double up as a second screen?

    • I recomended to buy from Amazon because I know from extensive personal experience that they are very good with packing and they have a great shopping policy. I have bought many TV’S and other electronics from them and only 1 tv I bought was damaged. I told them right away when I recieved that I had a damaged screen and the had me ship it back in the original box (they paid shipping) and they sent me a new one fast. Amazon also has the best price on most items. From time to time you may find a slightly lower lower price somewhere else but you run the risk of them not having such a great shipping policy and there’s also the fact that many companies are selling refurbished TV’S as new. Amazon is a very trusted source with great prices. You absolutely can connect three TV’S to a computer as long as they have the right connection. Just make sure you have an HDMI port on your computer and you are good to go. If not you can always buy a cable that connects hdmi to whatever input connection your computer has for around $10 if the connections aren’t compatible. I hope that helps. Thanks for reading and for taking the time to comment.

  • Just the picture alone at the start of your article makes me feel like going out and buying one of these TVs. It certainly looks like an awesome TV to play games on.

I’ve recently come into a bit of extra cash and seriously want to get back into playing some of the latest games on my Play Station. Part of the deal is to get a new TV that really makes the games come to life. Your article has definitely given me some things to think about.

    • thanks for checking out my article. 4k TV’S have really come a long way. Now that HDR is on most of them and the price has come down, this could be your time to spend that extra cash on one. Make sure your cateful. About checking to see if the TV you purchase has all the specifications I outlined for the best 4k gaming experience. Or you could always click on one of the TV’s I have picked in my article. They really are the best for gaming. Thanks for leaving a comment. Take care.

  • Man, lag is an enemy I know all too well. There aren’t any servers in my country (last time I checked, not even on my continent) so It’s great that you can get the right competitive improvements just by picking the right TV.
Samsung UN43KU7000 would definitely be my choice, especially if it was just for a TV completely dedicated to gaming.

    • Ryan,

Yes lag is your enemy when gaming. I really try to make it a point for people to realize this when looking for a TV for gaming. The Samsung UN43KU7000 and all thE TV’S I suggested are great tvs all around not just for gaming. Basically they if they are great for gaming they are great for everything but if a TV is good for movie watching and TV it’s not nessacarally good for gaming. Thanks for reading and for your comment.

  • I have always been interested in gaming TVs for a long time as I myself have owned a PS4.
But as I am student, I am not able to afford much for a super good TV.
Other than the budget TV which is 1000, is there any gaming TVs in the price range of about 500, that does not need have 4K but is decent in terms of lag, etc? Thanks!

    • Actually the best budget TV is only $650. It has been updated to the curved version of that TV. The flat version was in low supply, so the price went up dramatically. The best budget TV is now the Samsung UN43KU7500 Curved 43-Inch. It is an amazing deal at $650.

If you are looking for something under $500, I recommend the Samsung Electronics UN40MU6300 40-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2017 Model). It’s still a 4k HDR set with a decent frame rate. It’s just didn’t have quite as good of a picture or frame rate as the other models I recommended. You can get it from Amazon for under $500. Thanks for leaving a comment.

  • I hope I will get a PS4 soon and I will definitely need a good 4k TV. I actually really like the features of LG OLED55B6P Smart 4K and checked out the quality of pictures. It looks great but how about its quality price ratio? Is it any good?

    • I would say if you are only getting a ps4 you don’t necessarily need a 4k HDR TV. I strongly encourage you to get the PS4 Pro. It supports both 4k and HDR gaming. If you go with the pro then the LG OLED55B6P is a great choice. It is the top of the line TV for gaming. It has the best picture quality of any TV that has a suitable input lag response time for gaming. I choose the Samsung UNKS9000 because it has a little better input response time, but if you value the picture more this is the TV to go with. The OLED55B6P has a great value for the price because it features the best picture, great HDR features and still has a great input response time. I hope this helps, thanks for taking the time to comment.
