Best gaming Consoles
You could say that the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One S are both the best gaming consoles. They both have a lot to offer, however one console may be exactly what you are looking for while the other could be a better fit for someone else. It is important to understand all the features of both consoles before you buy. I’m going to go over some of the key features for each console and then give you a few questions to consider to help you figure out which is the best console for you.
The PS4 Pro is certainly the most powerful console out today, with its 4.2 TFLOPS AMD Radeon™ based GPU, 8 core processor, GDDR5 8GB 1GB of VRAM and 1TB of memory. You will be getting one powerful gaming machine capable of running the PSVR system perfectly. For more on the PSVR please read my “what is PlayStation VR” post. It’s also able to display all the PS4 Pro titles in HDR at 4k resolution. Also note the PS4 Pro is backwards compatible, so you will be able to play all regular PS4 games as well. For someone purchasing a console for gaming & streaming purposes only it is a great choice.
The only real negative things going for the PS4 Pro is it’s heftier price & Sony’s decision to not include an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The machine is more than powerful enough. It just wasn’t added to the PS4 Pro. This was a major issue for some users however it is capable of streaming 4k HDR video content from third party sources such as Netflix. For me personally the lack of an Ultra HD Blu-ray player did not matter one bit, considering I stream just about everything I watch these days. It is rapidly becoming the age of streaming. There is much speculation that Sony is even looking to move all games to streaming format sometime in the not so distant future. Of course that could only happen when ultra high speed internet is more widely available. This could be part of the reason the Ultra HD Blu-ray player was omitted from the PS4 Pro. For a more detailed review please see my post on the PS4 Pro.
Xbox One S
The Xbox One S is a very capable gaming machine in a 40% smaller (than the standard Xbox One) package. It may not have all the power the PS4 Pro boasts but it does have a lot going for it. The actual upgrade from the standard Xbox One is hard to see on paper. All the specs are nearly identical. There was some minor tweaking done that helped it to display HDR and upscale content to 4K resolution. Normally up scaling content to 4k resolution doesn’t work so well. The Xbox One S actually does an OK job of it on some games.
The ultra HD Blu-ray player the Xbox One S does not utilize this upscale technology because it displays content in true 4k resolution. It is also capable of streaming 4k HDR content in true 4k HDR form. The Xbox One S comes in a few version with 500GB, 1TB & 2TB’S of memory. You have to respect Microsoft’s decision to give you some kind of 4k HDR gaming before Scorpio comes out without having to shell out as much cash as a next Gen console would be. The price for all you get with this system is very low and without a doubt it is a fantastic value as a 4k gaming & entertainment system. For a more detailed review please see my review on the Xbox One S.
Before we move on if you’d like to better understand 4k HDR gaming please watch thus short video: Disclaimer that this video was created before most 4k HDR content was released there is actually a ton of content out now. This video does a great job of explaining what 4K HDR is.
So how do I choose from the best gaming consoles?
Buying a new console can be a very confusing process. There are many factors to consider when deciding which console to buy. Some features may be extremely important to some and not so important to others. In reality there is no real answer on which is the best, only which one is best for you. You really need to take some time & decide what’s important to you in your next console purchase or if you should even buy one at all if you already have a PS4 or Xbox One. When choosing between the best gaming consoles you need to be sure which is the right fit for you.
I’m going to list a few key factors to consider below to try to simplify the decisions making process. Answer the questions, then decide which factors are most important to you. Before you answer the questions I want to make it clear that if you plan on getting the most out of these consoles not just any 4K TV will do. Gaming in 4k can seriously increase your input lag and refresh rate. Please make sure you either have a capable 4k HDR TV or plan on buying one with the specs for the best 4k gaming experience. For more info please see my Best 4k Gaming TVs post.
- Do you own a 4k TV or plan on buying one in the near future?
If the answer is no, then I would say you should probably not waste your money on the PS4 Pro. Stick with what you have or if you feel the need to buy a new console, Consider the Xbox One S. The PS4 Pro is not really worth all that extra money if you don’t have a TV that will take advantage of it’s 4k HDR capabilities.
- If you do own a 4K TV or plan on buying one in the near future, is an Ultra HD Blu-ray player important to you?
If the answer is yes, then you will more than likely be happier with the Xbox One S. The PS4 Pro does not have an Ultra Blu-ray Player.
- If an ultra HD Blu-ray player is not important to you, then are you interested in the best graphics on a 4k HDR TV?
If the answer is yes than I would go with the PS4 Pro. The PS4 Pro offers superior resolution & frame rates.
- Is VR console gaming important to you & you either don’t have a PS4 or are looking to upgrade from your current console?
If the answer is yes than I recommend the PS4 Pro. The PS4 & PS4 Pro are the only consoles at the moment that support VR gaming.
- If you enjoy playing online with friends, what platform do your friends play on?
If online gaming with friends is very important to you than I would go with the console your friends play on. It would be kinda pointless if you buy the shiny new PS4 Pro & not have anyone to play online with. So if your friends play on Xbox get the Xbox One S or if your friends play on PS get the PS4 Pro. Please note that the PS4 Pro supports online gaming with the PS4 & the Xbox One S supports online gaming with the Xbox One.
- How much money are you willing to spend on a console? Right now the PlayStation 4 Pro Cost is higher at around $400?
While the Xbox One S cost is only $249 for Xbox One S 500gb, $349 for the Xbox One S 1TB & $399 for the Xbox One S 2TB. *Prices listed are MSRP & are subject to be higher based on availability of the console the PS4 Pro (1TB) comes in at around $400.
- If you already have a PS4 or Xbox One & none of the above factors matter to you than save your money. Wait for the next Gen console to come out.
- If you are looking to buy a new console & none of the above factors matter to you than consider the Xbox One S 500 GB. Even I have to admit it’s a great deal. If your in the market for a new console I couldn’t imagine buying just an Xbox One or even PS4 when the Xbox One S is at such a bargain.

The Nintendo Switch is out. I have added it to this this because I consider it to be one of the best gaming consoles available now. It is completely different then the above mentioned consoles. It offers a handheld console and home console in one with many family friendly and party style games to enjoy. If you love Nintendo titles such as Mario Kart and Zelda and or would love to have a home console and handheld gaming device in one Nintendo switch could be the console for you. Please see my Nintendo Switch review here for more information.

The PS4 slim may not be the best gaming console out right now but it is the smallest. It’s much slimmer & has slightly less surface area than the standard PS4. Other than that the only real difference is the design. It is has a solid Matte black finish with a glossy PS logo on top & the edges are rounded. It does look pretty cool. The only real reason I could see someone buying it, is if they travel a lot & plan on taking their console with them. It would be a breeze to back this up on & take it on the road with you. I remember when I traveled constantly for work. I was always in a hotel & took MY PS3 with me everywhere I went. I would have loved to have this instead.
