What is the Xbox elite controller
So what is the Xbox elite controller? You could say its Microsoft’s way of fixing the problem with the original Xbox One controller. In my mind one of the biggest reasons the PS4 sold better than the Xbox One is because it had a better controller. I never really liked the Xbox One controller. Its a cheap plastic controller & doesn’t seem very precise.
Then there’s the fact that it doesn’t come with a rechargeable battery pack. You have to put in a couple AA batteries unless you buy the rechargeable battery pack sold separately (sadly the elite controller requires AA batteries as well). For those of you who agree with me that the original Xbox One controller is a cheap plastic controller not worthy of the console, you do have another option. The Xbox Elite Controller.
It is pretty expensive for just a controller however it has a ton of features & is overall a very well built controller. I was very skeptical about it at first. I couldn’t imagine it really being worth the price. One of my good friends told me how great it was, so I decided to give it a try.
The controller will set you back about $150. As I said before it’s pretty expensive. I didn’t think I’d end up buying one. I thought I’d borrow my friends to write the review & then be done with it. It didn’t quite work out that way, I feel in love with it. I ended up buying one & it’s the only controller I use now. Of course I didn’t tell my wife how much it costs though.
The controller can be used on the PC, Xbox One X (when it’s released), Xbox One, One S & even the PS4 & Pro if you use a third party USB connected accessory. I believe there are a couple options but I use the Cronus max Plus. One of the key features on the Cronus Max Plus is it allows you to use just about any controller on any Console. I will fill you in a little more on that later. For now here’s my review on the Xbox elite controller.
Xbox elite controller review
Overall rating: 9 out of 10
My first impression of the controller when I opened up the box was that it looked really cool & very well made. It has a rubberized grip on the grips of the controller. When you pick up the controller you can tell a big weight difference from the original controller. The elite being heavier. It isn’t too heavy, it just has more weight because it is made of rubber & metal not cheap plastic. The triggers & d-pad are silver & the stick controls, buttons & the main controller are black. The bottoms of grips are grey. It really is one beautiful controller.
It comes with several different interchangeable parts to suit your preference, that all fit snugly in the included case. You have a standard d-past & a circular d-pad. There’s three different options for the sticks. A rounded medium sized stick, the other two are more of a PS style grip sticks, one very short & the other being the tallest of the sticks. I prefer the medium sized sticks but it’s totally up to your personal preference which is best for you.
The elite controller also comes with extra trigger you can attach underneath the controller. All of the interchangeable parts lock on to the controller magnetically. The magnets hold them in very well. I’ve never add an issue with them coming off the controller when I didn’t eat them to yet they are easy to take off. It’s an ingenious design. All of these buttons can be completely remapped via the windows & PC App. There’s also a button that can change between settings you configured for different games or weapons, etc…
The key feature for me is the hair trigger locks. You can adjust how far the trigger has to travel before it registers. This is great for FPS. Just make sure you adjust it back before playing any Racing games. The hair trigger setting doesn’t allow you to give the car enough gas to reach top speed. I didn’t realize that the first time I used the controller for Fortza 6. It took me a couple races before I realized why I kept loosing.
I think the #1 reason I bought the controller is how precise it feels. The movement of the sticks feels very smooth & even. I fell like the standard controller or any controller I’ve used for that matter just doesn’t come close to the precision & smooth movement it has. It really is one fine tuned instrument. There was no detail overlooked when they designed it.
It’s aesthetically pleasing to look at. Feels amazing to hold. Has unbelievably precise, smooth movement & is ridiculously customize-able. All this may add up to a $150 controller for some people but I can completely understand why someone would not want to spend that kind of money on just a controller.
There is actually one bad thing about this controller & it’s actually pretty bad. Remember when I told you how the standard Xbox One controller didn’t come with the rechargeable battery pack? Yeah you guessed it this one doesn’t have it either. You still have to put 2 AA batteries in your $150 controller. Personally I think that’s ridiculous, I almost wrote Microsoft a letter telling them how horrible that was. It nearly stopped me from buying it. Then I remembered how much I loved the controller & that I already had a rechargeable battery pack I bought for the standard controller. So I just shut up & used that.

Xbox elite controller on Xbox One S
The Xbox One S controller is certainly an upgrade from the standard Xbox Controller. If you own an S you may not have as much of a need for the elite controller but it’s still a much better controller in my opinion. The S controller still doesn’t have the same smoothness & precision as the elite. It also doesn’t have all those customize-able components either. The one his the S does have that the Elite doesn’t is Bluetooth connectivity. Being able to connect via Bluetooth is really nice if you want to use the S controller on PC. To use the elite controller on PC you either need to connect with a wire or purchase a wireless adapter to connect it.
Xbox elite controller on PS4
Earlier I mentioned you can play the the PS4 & PS4 Pro with the Cronus max Plus. While this is true please note you have to use a wire from the controller connected to a USB hub that is also has a PS4 controller connected to it & then connect the USB hub to the Cronus Max Pro that is finally connected to the PS4 or Pro. This sounds much more complicated than it is, i hooked mine up in a matter of seconds but it is a major issue to have to use a cord. I actually tried going back to my PS4 controller but I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t stand using the PS4 controller after using the elite. So I’m stuck with the wire.
The Cronus Max Pro is a nifty little gadget that let’s you use just about any controller on any console, some without the wire. It also has features that allow you to setup rapid fire & other game packs to gain advantages in a boat load of games. I personally think that is kinda cheating so I don’t use any other features besides the function of using my favorite controller on my favorite console. It’s up to you weather or not you use those other features. I’m sure they could help out some players that just aren’t that good at certain games like FPS.
The Xbox elite controller is a very great looking, well made, highly customizeable controller & in my opinion the best controller available. It’s also a very expensive controller. It will be hard for some people to justify spending that kind of money on a controller but for those of you who want the best controller out, I highly recommend it.
